Production Specs: J-Zone

First commercial beat sold/placed: Fool I Got Your Back for Preacher Earl and the Ministry, in 1995.

How long did it take you to produce something that you were proud of: About 11 months from when I officially started making beats.

Favourite production set-up: MPC-2000, any of the Tascam mixing boards from the ‘80s, Tascam Portatwo 4 track cassette recorder, ProTools, Technics 1200, mixer, Moog Little Phatty synthesizer, 60s vintage drum kit “with 20″ bass drum by Slingerland, Camco, Gretsch or Rogers.

Best digging advice from someone ever: I learned to dig on my own. I never really got any advice. I’d pick up new tips over the years through experience.

Producer, in the last 3 months, that made you say: “Oh, shit, i have to go back to the lab!”: None, but I have weird tastes.

Your worst production mistake ever made:Not expanding with my sound sooner. I waited until after my third album to try new things and by then I had been pigeonholed into a certain sound, so when I tried to do something different, people rejected it. They associated me permanently with the sound of my first three albums. I never recovered from that.

One essential mixing tip:Always listen to it both on an iPod and in a car if you can. That’s how most people listen to their music.
